Course Outline
e-Class

The purpose of the course is to understand Regional Science and Regional Development as well as their connection with Social Policy,
in the light of theoretical analysis and empirical processing. Development at the regional level is the complex result of many different social, economic and political factors that lead to the development or underdevelopment of a region or a set of regions.
The study of these factors and the empirical-quantitative assessment of their impact on the process of regional development constitutes the main subject of this course.
In the context of the course, economic, social and labor inequalities are examined towards their spatial dimension, their evolution over
time, as well as regarding the causes that create them and the policies followed (economic, social and others) for their limitation, both
in Greece and internationally. The analysis is carried out through the use of indicators utilized by Regional Development science in
combination with available empirical data.

After the successful completion of the course students will be able to:
• To understand the basic concepts and theories of Regional Science and Regional Development
• To use the indicators and quantitative tools of Regional Science for understanding and studying Regional problems.
• To comprehend concepts analyzed in lectures, seminars and educational visits through the study of textbooks and bibliography.
• To solve (having developed synthetic ability and critical spirit) practical problems related to combined application of Regional Development theories and corresponding social policies.
