This course introduces students to the key concepts and principles of demography, as well as the fundamental techniques for studying demographic phenomena. Particular emphasis is placed on the interconnections between demography and the biological, historical, social, and economic phenomena, as well as the cultural characteristics, of human populations.
The primary learning objective is to familiarize students with quantitative research methods as applied to the field of demography and to develop their capacity for the comparative study of populations. Linking demography with historical, social, and economic phenomena and cultural characteristics introduces students to a holistic approach to the study of humans; it fosters multi-level, interdisciplinary thinking aimed at a more comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms driving the evolution of human populations over time.
More specifically, upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
– delve into the fundamental principles of demography;
– understand the key mechanisms of human population growth and be capable of independently conducting demographic analyses. -to become familiar with sources of demographic, social, economic, and cultural data, and to develop the ability to search for, evaluate, and use them.
-to develop the ability to describe and interpret the demographic profile of a population.
– to develop the ability to interpret demographic similarities and differences among human populations.
-to be able to recognize, interpret, and evaluate the role of diversity in the development of demographic characteristics.
