Nikolaos K. Koulouris is Associate Professor at the Department of Social Policy of Democritus University of Thrace in “Social Policy and Custodial and Non-Custodial Offenders’ Treatment”. He is also the Deputy Director of the MSc “Criminological and Penal Approaches of Corruption, Economic and Organized Crime” at the Hellenic Open University, a founding member and Chair of the Board of Directors of the Greek Society for the Study of Crime and Social Control and a member of the International Interuniversity Network “Criminal Justice and Critical Criminology”.

He has worked as a criminologist at KorydallosCustodial Institution and has been member and Chair of the Central Scientific Council of Prisons, an elected member of the Working Group of the Council for Penological Cooperation of the Council of Europe and an unpaid scientific associate of the Special Standing Committee of the Parliament for the Penitentiary System and Other Structures of Detention. He has also been a member of legislative committees of the Ministry of Justice for the Penitentiary Code, electronic surveillance and legal aid and has participated in numerous research programmes and projects related to the criminal justice system, penal sanctions, institutions for the execution of sentences, custodial institutions and their staff, probation services, etc. His scientific and authoring interests are focused on penal repression, the prison system and its reform, alternative criminal sanctions, various forms of treatment of adults and minors, either in the community or in custody, the sociology of deviance and the social construction of crime. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal “Antigone: the Question” and a scientific collaborator of the journal “Criminal Justice”. He is also an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Greek Council for Refugees.
